Mayor Releases Mid-Term Report to Citizens

Monday December 31, 2012

Highlights include job growth, health, education, compassion

Marking the midpoint of his term, Mayor Greg Fischer today released a report to citizens that highlights achievements of his administration’s first two years in office.

The 12-page report — “Progress Louisville: Creating America’s Most Innovative, Entrepreneurial City” — has sections devoted to jobs and the economy, education, health, compassion, building a better Louisville and creating an efficient and lean city government.

“We’ve gotten a lot done in the past two years and have much more to do,” Fischer said. “This report is a look at where we’ve been and where we’re going.”

Fischer said strides the city has made since he took office in January 2011 are due to a dedicated workforce of nearly 6,000 city employees. “We are working to create the best city government in America — and our employees strive every day to meet that goal,” he said.

Some of the report’s highlights include:
  • The creation of 22,000 jobs in the Louisville Metro region in the last two years, 4 percent growth. Louisville is climbing out of the recession at a faster clip than the nation, according to data from the Brookings Institution;
  • The creation of a culture of compassion in Louisville, including the annual Give a Day week of service that resulted in 90,000 volunteers and acts of kindness in 2012;
  • The building of a better Louisville through better policing, new libraries and the planting of trees to strengthen the city’s canopy;
  • The creation of a lean government where taxpayer dollars are spent wisely -- and where that information is shared with citizens through LouieStat. Like a private sector business, the city now has an Office of Performance Improvement designed to create an efficient, effective and transparent government.
