Department of Public Health and Wellness Announces Nurse of the Year Winners

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (July 29, 2008) The Metro Department of Public Health and has honored two of its staff members as “Nurses of the Year.” Each year the department names a winner in both the Clinical Nurse and Outreach Nurse categories.
The 2008 winner in the Clinical Nurse category is Vonnie Hughes, ARNP. She is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner at the Specialty Clinic, which treats patients with sexually transmitted diseases. Hughes examines and prescribes drugs treatment for patients at the clinic. She also has helped to develop clinic procedures.
In presenting the award, Public Health and Wellness Medical Director Dr. Matt Zahn said, “Vonnie provides excellent care to the patient population she serves. She has shown outstanding leadership developing policies and procedures to improve patient care. Vonnie is a dedicated, excellent health care provider.”
The winner in the Outreach Nurse category is Lisa Hall, RN. She works with the HANDS (Health Access Nurturing Developing Services) Program doing home visits to first time parents. These visits assist with child development, parenting skills and health services.
Hall also does follow-up home visits with women who have had abnormal mammography screening results. She also gives flu shots each year and assisted in the Community Health Screenings Project for west and southwest Louisville residents. Hall also chairs the Head Lice Task Force of the Department of Public Health and Wellness, the Jefferson County Public Schools and Neighborhood Place.
Dr. Matt Zahn said, “Lisa has built very good and trusting relationships with her patients. The assistance she brings to them is making a real difference in the lives of children and their families. Lisa is an extremely competent, caring nurse.”
