Abramson, Yarmuth Announce Citywide Sidewalk and Paving Projects

Monday August 16, 2010

Stimulus funded work will continue through the fall

Mayor Jerry Abramson, U.S. Representative John Yarmuth, (KY-3) and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials, announced this afternoon thousands of sidewalk and paving improvement projects taking place throughout Louisville.

Crews are working on more than 2300 sites located in nearly every area of Louisville.

Work includes new sidewalks, sidewalk repairs and some asphalt resurfacing on state and city roads.

The work is being funded with more than $8.5 million in federal ARRA (American Reinvestment and Recovery Act) stimulus dollars.

“This is a win-win situation for the entire community,” Abramson said. “These projects are putting people to work and we are making much-needed repairs to our sidewalks and streets that will benefit every citizen.”

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is administering the stimulus funding for these projects. The KYTC awarded 47 contracts to complete the work.

“These investments are putting Louisvillians to work right now while improving our local infrastructure,” said Yarmuth. “That’s exactly the kind of impact the Recovery Act was intended to have – putting people to work immediately while addressing our community’s long-term needs.”

Work began mid-May and is expected to conclude by late October. More than half the locations have already been completed.

"The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is pleased to partner with Louisville Metro Government to move these roadway and sidewalk projects forward," said Matt Bullock, Chief District Engineer for the Louisville District Department of Highways. “Our staff is administering these stimulus funded contracts and overseeing the inspection of the construction process."

Crews will also be working on sidewalk and/or paving at the following areas today:
