Councilmembers Stuckel and Heiner celebrate LaGrange Quiet Zone on Monday

Metro Councilman Hal Heiner (District 19) and Glen Stuckel (District 17) were joined by Mr. Rick Storm of Metro Public Works and Mr. Don Reiss of Forest Springs along with other leaders as they celebrated the end of loud train whistles for the businesses and neighbors living along LaGrange Road. The proposal for a quiet zone was introduced to both councilmen by residents of nearby neighborhoods as they walked their respective council districts. Councilman Stuckel and Heiner started work on this project in the summer of 2005, working with leaders in Frankfort and at CSX to use newly passed Federal Guidelines to finally stop the horns that wake up households nearly every night.

This project finds a better way to warn motorists and pedestrians of trains while putting an end to the repeated horns that can be heard across multiple neighborhoods. I am especially excited to know that, as our children return to school, they will be able to sleep through the night without multiple horns waking them up through the night.”

The LaGrange Quiet Zone Project added railroad crossing gates and signals to four intersections along LaGrange Road. These crossings are located at: Westport Road, Altawood Court, Chamberlain Lane and along a private driveway located near LaGrange Road in eastern Jefferson County. Neighborhoods that are included in the quiet zone are Forest Springs, Saddlebrook, Oliver Station in District 19 and Woodlands Creek along with residents from Maxey Lane and Altawood Court in District 17.

The total cost of the quiet zone, which included planning, the construction of medians and the installation of crossing gates was $567,300. The funding for this project came from money secured in previous fiscal year budgets and through Community Infrastructure Funds pooled by Republican members of the Metro Council.
