Louisville Grocery in Old Louisville is Finalist for National Honor
 
The Root Cellar opened with an aid of city small-business loan


A small grocery in Old Louisville which only sells local foods from local farmers – and which was opened with the help of a city government loan – is the finalist in a national contest that highlights the importance of small businesses to the American economy.

The Root Cellar, at 3rd and Hills streets on the site of a former gas station, is the only business from Kentucky to be named a finalist by the Retail Means Jobs competition of the National Retail Federation.

The Root Cellar has an opportunity to win a cash prize of $25,000 through an online voting contest. Persons can view videos and vote by visiting www.retailmeansjobs.com/vote. Anyone can cast a vote for their favorite videos by voting up to 10 times a day per matchup. The Root Cellar sells local farm fresh produce and meats and cheese and other locally-produced items.

NRF announced the 20 finalists of its “This is Retail” video contest this week, determined from scoring by prominent retail executives at NRF member companies. The film about The Root Cellar was created by local filmmaker Ben Evans of BEgreenCreative.com, director of the award-winning documentary “YERT – Your Environmental Road Trip” (YERT.com).

The Root Cellar, owned by Ron Smith, opened in the spring of 2011 with support by the city’s microenterprise forgivable loan which is from a Housing and Urban Development grant managed by the Community Services and Revitalization Department. “The Root Cellar represents Louisville’s movement to bring farm fresh food to residents of Louisville,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. “I hope everyone can show their local pride and support this innovative business by voting online.”

The selection process will continue through April as the top 20 videos go head-to-head in a bracket-style tournament, each week being narrowed down to the top 10, five and finally the top three. The videos with the most votes before the end of each six-day period will move on to the next round. The contest’s top three finalists will be announced on May 1, and will be flown to NRF’s Washington Leadership Conference for the announcement of the contest rankings on May 16. The first place winner will receive $25,000 with $15,000 for second place and $10,000 for third place.

The winning entries were from 15 states and The Root Cellar was the only entry from Kentucky to make the final cut.
