Residents in District 1 may be noticing cleaner streets and alleys as a result of the summer return of the Green Clean Team.
“This year, I am partnering with Dr. Eddie Woods and the Life Institute to provide summer employment for young people in our area,” says Councilwoman Judith Green (D-1). “We had a very positive response from last year’s program.”
Some 70 young people between the ages of 13 to 17 applied to be on the Green Clean Team this summer. The Team began cleaning up areas around District one in early July. Their work will continue through the first week in August Students receive a stipend for working and will enjoy a “Back to School” Celebration picnic on August 7th.
“It is my hope that this program will build a sense of pride and community involvement for the Clean Team,” says Green. “I hope residents will take the time to say thank you to these young people if they see them working in their neighborhoods.”
The Life Institute is an organization that works with young people to keep them from entering gang activity and violence through positive programs.
“The goal here is to show young people that doing a good job has its rewards,” says Green. “It also shows the community that there are many good young people who live in our city and they are willing to help.”
