Louisville – Many neighborhoods are unique in Metro Louisville but sometimes a simple stroll down a sidewalk will not give an indication of the pride a neighborhood shows.
On Thursday December 28th, Councilman Tom Owen (D) 8 will join others for a formal unveiling of the “4 Corners” sidewalk medallions project at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Bardstown Road.
“We’re adding yet another visual marker for any one who wants to take a nice walk along the historic Baxter-Bardstown corridor,” says Owen. “The Medallions celebrate that four vibrant neighborhoods converge at the Eastern Parkway intersection.”
Those neighborhoods are Cherokee Triangle, Bonnycastle, Deer Park and Tyler Park.
Beginning in late 1990, a series of street level improvements began as an enhancement of Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue. The Metro Council District 8 office and its aldermanic predecessor worked with the leadership of the Cherokee Triangle, Tyler Park, Deer Park and Bonnycastle neighborhoods to ensure these improvements moved forward.
Over the years, a wall mural project was initiated by Owen. Street level improvements were made at the Douglass Loop. Landscaping improvement were made to the Eastern Parkway intersection and Phase I of the Bardstown Road Streetscape project was completed this year.
The “4 Corners” sidewalk medallions will kick off Phase II of the current streetscape program. Each of the four neighborhoods is represented with a medallion encased in the sidewalk at each corner of the intersection.
“I want more and more folks to think of a leisurely evening window gazing stroll along Baxter Avenue and Bardstown Road as an evening ritual.” says Owen. “It is all about human interaction and discovery and these medallions can help lead the way.”
Owen and representatives of the four neighborhoods will be at the intersection of Bardstown Road and Eastern Parkway at 10:00am, Thursday, December 28th for the formal unveiling.
