More than 5,500 volunteers representing more than 250 community organizations picked up trash yesterday during the Brightside/Citi Spring Community-Wide Cleanup, event organizers said.
"That number really shows that people take pride in their community," said Lisa Gunterman, who supervised the event for Brightside.
The organization supplies volunteers with gloves and bags for litter-pickup efforts regularly but yesterday's cleanup was an annual event.
Gunterman said participation in the event has grown steadily, noting that about 1,000 volunteers showed up in 2006.
Neighborhood, civic, youth and faith-based groups participated yesterday, and they were able to pick the area they wanted to clean up, Gunterman said.
"We like that the groups can designate where they want to work because it allows for extra meaning in the work they do," she said.
The Newburg Neighborhood Youth Council had the largest group with about 300 registered volunteers, Brightside said.
Gunterman said she did not yet know how much trash was collected yesterday, but a similar event last year collected 30 tons.
