Louisville – With summer here, weekends can become a great time to get out with the family and take a bike ride through out Jefferson County.
Such an activity will take on a special meaning at Waterfront Park on Saturday June 17th, 2006 when the Brain Injury Association of Kentucky will hold it’s ‘Rollin on the River event.
“I would like to encourage everyone to come out and support the good work of this Association,” says Councilwoman Mary Woolridge (D) 3. “BIAK has done a commendable job of awareness on the seriousness of head injuries.”
BIAK is holding this first ever event as a fundraiser, It is also a chance to talk about safety and the need for helmets.
‘Rollin on the River’ is a combined walk, bicycle and motorcycle run event. Various teams will also raise money to continue the group’s through pledges. The event begins at 12:30 pm.
“Any head injury can be devastating,” says Councilwoman Vicki Welch (D) 13. “The road to recovery can be a long one and it is something that most parents need to be aware of if their child is on a bike.”
Woolridge is chair of the Metro Council’s Health and Human Services Committee. Welch is a professional nurse. Both women say the event could go a long way in addressing the need for safety helmets when riding a bicycle or motorcycle.
“While children’s safety should be a concern for all of us in wearing a helmet, it would not hurt for adult to get a refresher course on how to avoid serious injury on a bike,” says Welch.
The mission of the Brain Injury Association of Kentucky is to serve those who have been affected by brain injury through advocacy, education, injury prevention, research, service and support.
“We are fortunate to have a non-profit group like this one not only serving Metro Louisville but all of Kentucky,” says Woolridge. “If you know someone who will be raising money for BIAK, then get in contact with them and pledge your support.”
