LOUISVILLE – Athletes of all ages – and their pooches too – are encouraged to participate in one of the more unusual and fun road races in the region on Saturday, July 12, when the Southern Parkway Mile takes place near Southern Parkway and New Cut Road.
The Southern Parkway Mile divisions begin at 6 p.m. on July 12, wrapping up with an 8K Road Race that is tentatively scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Divisions include a “doggie dash,” a “first responders run,” a Western Kentucky University alumni race and a wheelchair race. The races benefit the Kentucky Wheelchair Athletics Association and the Metro Parks Adapted Leisure Activities Program.
Additionally, there will be a Finish Line Festival sponsored by the Beechmont Neighborhood Association and O’Shea’s Irish Pub near the intersection of Southern Parkway and Woodlawn Avenue. Food, games and music for the entire family will take place at the festival, which runs from 5-11 p.m. Admission to the festival is free, and brats, burgers, beer and soft drinks will be available for purchase. A space bounce, face painting and bean bag toss will be main attractions for the kids.
“The Southern Parkway Mile is a very unique race,” said BJ Levis, recreation administrator for Metro Parks and the supervisor of the Adapted Leisure program. “This race brings out all ages and abilities to come and enjoy not only a fun race, but also a festival with events for the whole family.”
Swag’s Sports Shoes is the presenting sponsor for the race, which is in its sixth year. Swag Hartel, owner, said he’s pleased at how the race has continued to grow over the years.
“With the festival being at the finish line, this has really grown to be a good thing,” Hartel said. “It’s a community event now for the folks on the south end, and it’s been a great way for us to showcase our parks and the parkways.”
Registrations must be postmarked on or before July 5, 2008, and must be mailed to: Southern Parkway Mile, 8116 Shobe Lane, Louisville, KY 40228. Walk-in registrations will also take place at Swag’s Sport Shoes, 7415 Old Third Street Road. Late registration begins July 6, with a $5 per person late fee applying.
