Switch in Alcohol Enforcement Will Mean Improved Efficiency, Effectiveness

Mayor Jerry Abramson today announced that he is streamlining the city’s alcohol enforcement efforts under one roof to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
The change – effective tomorrow, Aug. 1 – moves seven inspectors working in Alcohol Beverage Control in the Department of Inspections, Permits and Licenses to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).
“This change will streamline enforcement efforts and allow Metro Government to more effectively respond to citizen complaints,” Abramson said today in announcing the move along with LMPD Chief Robert White. “Without adding additional staff or dollars, we will also be able to increase our enforcement efforts with this change.”
Lt. Ricky Brewer, who manages the Vice Squad, will add the ABC Unit to his oversight responsibilities. Chief investigator Glenn Smith will continue to head the unit, which includes six other investigators.
White plans to use this unit to train several officers in each of the 10 police districts on alcohol law and enforcement strategies. The move will result in another 20 to 30 officers who are specially trained to focus on enforcing laws on alcohol sales to minors and other alcohol laws, Abramson said. “That’s another 20 or 30 sets of eyes and ears that will improve enforcement of alcohol laws,” he added.
Abramson said while there has always been coordination between the two agencies, there were, nevertheless, examples of overlap and inefficiency. For example, Abramson said police officers and ABC inspectors sometimes responded to the same citizen complaint regarding alcohol sales to minors.
“This move represents another example in merger of removing barriers and redundancies between departments to find more efficient, effective ways to serve the citizens of this community,” Abramson said. “With this move, we’ll do an even better job in enforcement of a critical safety area.”
