On Thursday night, the Louisville Metro Council gave approval to $12,900 in funding for Project One, a summer youth jobs program operated by a group who have helped thousands of young people find employment in tough economic times. Many are entering the job market for the very first time.
“Project One has a proven track record of assisting young people to find work in the summer. The program goes beyond just the job,” says President Jim King (D-10). “Those who are helped by Project One get the preparation and training they need to find work long after the summer is over.”
This summer, more than 700 area youth have applied to find a job through the program which is set to start on July 1st. Between now and then, the applicants will be shown how to prepare a resume, how to fill out a job application and how to interview for a job. The age range for summer jobs is 13 to 15 and 16 to 21.
Metro Council funding will assist in training and operations of the program.
“Our goal is to help young people with the correct approach to finding a job and understanding what the job market looks for when anyone is out looking for employment,,” says Dr. Charles King, Executive Director of Project One. “The funding help we receive goes toward that goal and I am appreciative for this funding from the Metro Council.”
Dr. King says this year Project One’s program is more important for young people since the closing of the Youth Alive program a few years ago and the closing of several Boys and Girls clubs in the area for budget reasons. The program operates in several locations: Lyles Mall, Fairdale, Farnsley and Newburg.
Council members who have provided funding include: President King, David Tandy (D-4), Barbara Shanklin (D-2), David James (D-6), Mary C. Woolridge (D-3), Attica Scott (D-1), Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13), Jon Ackerson (R-18), Robin Engel (R-22), Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5), Madonna Flood (D-24), Brent Ackerson (D-26), Tom Owen (D-8).
