In years past, it has been a one stop information center for parents in District 5 to get their children ready for a new school year. Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5 and the Shawnee Weed and Seed Committee announce “A Safe & Healthy Return to School” is set for Thursday, August 5th.

“It will not be long before children and parents will be head back to the classroom and it’s important to be prepared,” says Hamilton. “This is the place where parents can ask questions and learn if there are any changes in the school system that your child needs to be aware of.

In 2008, Hamilton partnered with the Shawnee Weed and Seed Committee, Louisville Metro Housing and Family Services, Northwest Neighborhood Place and Jefferson County Public Schools to create “A Safe and Healthy Return to School”

This year’s event will be held at Neighborhood Place Northwest at Shawnee High School, 4018 W. Market St. From 2:00pm to 6:00pm.

The program is free to residents of District 5 and the Shawnee neighborhood.

“Children must be accompanied by their parents/guardians to receive free school supplies and refreshments while they last, after attending at least one of a variety of talk shops that will be offered,” says Hamilton “Talk Shops are workshops that last about 20 minutes on a wide variety of topics.”

The talk shops will be led by the Center for Women & Families, Seven Counties Services, Louisville Metro Police, Louisville Metro Health & Wellness Peer Educators, Huntington Learning Center and the Shawnee High School Family Resource Center. Vision, lead and blood pressure screenings will be available and participants will also be able to sign up for a Library card. Other local service providers and the Jefferson County Public School Resource Service will be on hand.

“As we continue to encourage the rebuilding of the Shawnee Neighborhood, it is important to remember our children and their education,” says Hamilton. “Our children are our future and any community we build today must depend on those who will follow the groundwork we have laid out. The key is our children and their education.”
