Great American Smokeout A Great Time to Decide to Quit

Thursday November 16, 2006

Health Department Offers Stop Smoking Classes at Community Sites

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (November 15, 2006) Every year, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout by quitting smoking or smoking less or quitting for the day. The event, which is today, challenges people to stop using tobacco products and raises awareness of the many effective ways to stop smoking for good. The event is held each year on the third Thursday of November.

“Today is the day to quit. I encourage residents to do it for themselves and their families,” said Metro Health Director Dr. Adewale Troutman. "With Louisville’s new comprehensive Smoke Free Law going into effect in July, this is the ideal time to sign up for a stop smoking class,” said Troutman.

Research shows that smokers are most successful in kicking the habit when they have some means of support, such as nicotine replacement products, counseling, prescription medicine to lessen cravings, guide books, and the encouragement of friends and family members.

The Health Department and its community partners offer stop smoking classes at sites located throughout the area. The classes use the highly successful Cooper/Clayton stop-smoking method. The 13-week course uses nicotine replacement products, such as patches, lozenges, and gum and includes weekly support group meetings with informative videotapes and a book for each participant.

Attached is a schedule of upcoming stop smoking classes. For more information or to sign up, phone 574-STOP or visit the Health Department web site at www.louisvilleky.gov/health
