2009 Mayor’s Hike & Bike Set for Memorial Day

Thursday May 7, 2009

Mayor's Healthy Hometown Hike and bikeMayor Jerry Abramson today announced that the increasingly popular Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Subway Fresh Fit Hike & Bike events will continue in 2009 with the first on Memorial Day, May 25, beginning at 10 a.m. at Waterfront Park.

“More families and individuals are making an effort to be healthy and fit and our Hike & Bike events have become a great way for families to exercise and have fun together,” Abramson said. “Last year thousands of families participated in the Hike & Bike series – it’s becoming a Memorial Day and Labor Day tradition for many of our residents.”

Subway Restaurants continues its support for the events as the Title Sponsor for both Memorial and Labor Day Hike & Bikes. Norton Healthcare is a supporting sponsor for both events.

The Hike & Bike cycling route will highlight various attractions and historic locations. Starting at Waterfront Park, the route crosses the Clark Memorial /2nd Street Bridge, progresses west through the Portland neighborhood, along tree-lined Northwestern and Southwestern Parkways, though Shawnee Park and back to Waterfront Park via several neighborhoods.

The complete bicycle route is about 15 miles, with several turnoffs available providing alternate routes as short as two miles. For walkers, a wheelchair-accessible “Hike” of about 3.5 miles will start at Waterfront Park, cross the Clark Memorial/2nd Street Bridge then back through downtown Louisville to Waterfront Park. Walkers can bring dogs to participate in the hike, but must keep their dogs on a leash and pick up waste during the walk in observance of existing laws.

To celebrate healthy living in Louisville, SUBWAY Restaurants are giving away four Trek bikes from Scheller's Fitness & Cycling. To be eligible, you must register online at Registration ends on May 17. Winners will be announced at the Hike & Bike.

The cycling route will be marked with signage and will include break stations staffed by volunteers to assist with directions and water. The Louisville Bicycle Club is providing “bike captains” to help cyclists obey the rules of the road. “Bike doctors” will be along the route to assist cyclists with any equipment problems. Louisville Metro Police will provide traffic assistance at key intersections and the Louisville Metro EMS bicycle team will patrol the route.

A healthy marketplace with nutritional snacks, free children’s activities and informational booths will begin at 9 a.m. at Waterfront Park. A limited number of free T-shirts will be available. The Brain Injury Association will distribute 300 bike helmets to riders who don’t have one.

This is the fifth year for the popular Hike & Bikes, which are held twice a year. Thousands of cyclists and walkers have joined the Mayor Abramson on Memorial Day and Labor Day to explore the city’s downtown, historic neighborhoods and scenic parks. Neighborhood associations, Louisville Community Development Bank and groups such as the Flags for Vets are volunteering at various water stops along the bike route.

Flags4Vets will have a Memorial Day display of 25,000 flags that spell U-S-A in Waterfront Park as a tribute to the men and women who serve our country. Flags4Vets is a national charity based in Louisville with a mission to privately fund U.S. flags placed on the graves of U.S. Veterans and to advance the cause of the U.S. Flag through public outreach.

The events are part of the ongoing Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement, created to encourage Louisville residents to be more active and make healthier lifestyle choices.
