In honor of Earth Day, CEMEX Kosmos Cement Company is in the process of getting a special gift ready for Metro Louisville. The gift is 1000 Native Kentucky trees now being planted at the company’s facility in Kosmosdale.

“I want to applaud the CEMEX effort,” says Councilman Bob Henderson (D-14). “Not only will these trees be an enhancement for many areas of the city but will help with our environment.”

CEMEX is planting the 1000 this week at a 300 foot plot of land on the company’s property. The trees were selected with help from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service who is partnering in the effort. Other partners include the Kentucky Division of Forestry, members of the plant’s Sportsman’s club and the plant’s next door neighbor Mr. Gordon Ritchie.

The tree planting is part of CEMEX’s effort to reduce its carbon footprint in the area. The plant is in a continuing process of reducing its footprint through energy efficiency and energy reduction.

“The community should know the kinds of trees we are talking about are Eastern Redbud and flowering dogwood,” says Henderson. “CEMEX is also planting a wide variety of trees that will stay on their site and are geared to reducing Greenhouse gases.”

Saplings of the tree were purchased through the Kentucky Division of Forestry. The trees will be maintained for a two to three year period and then will be made available to local parks, families and initiatives of community urban restoration for no charge.

“I hope the community will keep an eye on this project and will take advantage of these trees when they are ready,” says Henderson. “Out in the district, we continue to try to keep our environment clean and these trees will go a long way in spreading the message of protecting the natural beauty of our area.”
