OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS AND ACTIVISTS: MOTESBOOKS PRODUCES A RETREAT OF ONE’S OWN: THE GATHERING OF WRITERS AND SONGWRITERS Kentucky publisher MotesBooks will produce A Retreat of One’s Own: The Gathering of Writers & Songwriters, at Kenlake State Resort Park in west Kentucky. The event will be held October 16-18, but registration closes August 15. Designed as a creative, artistic and community-building opportunity for writers of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and songs the Gathering is open to any writer or songwriter, age 18 or older, at any level of expertise, from beginner to experienced.
Only 30 openings (first-come, first-served) are guaranteed for this workshop-based retreat led by a team that includes acclaimed novelist Silas House and author Anne Shelby. Nashville songwriter Jen Wallwork Dominguez will be a guest presenter, as will Murray writers Constance Alexander and Squire Babcock, and Jason Howard of Berea.

KFW COMMUNITY MEMBER NEWS: KFW CONGRATULATES: Suzanne Lamb whose story Real Self was awarded third prize in the Newport Review's Flash Fiction Contest for very short stories, and appears in the Spring/Summer issue at Contest Winners. Another of Suzanne's stories, Liberal Arts, appeared recently in Wigleaf: [very] short fiction. More information about the Flash Fiction Contest.
LIBERTY TATTOO AND ART PARLOR PRESENTS BIRDS, SNAKES, AND AIRPLANES Art work by C.M. and Kelly Laster will be featured in an exhibit at the Liberty Tattoo and Art Parlor, 2801 S 3rd Street, established by Louisville Artists Suzanne Edds and Gary Bell. Birds, Snakes and Airplanes will be exhibited June 24 through July 25, with the opening party scheduled for July 11 from 7 PM until 10 PM. The Lasters mix signs and messages with pop icons and other inspirations in a positive Apocalyptic twist. The Lasters, who also work together as Liberty Press Screenprinting, are featuring their new art car, The Laster Blasters Innergalactic Shack-a-allac, in the exhibit. SARAH LYON DEBUTS NEW WORK WITH SOLO SHOW AT THE GREEN BUILDING GALLERY Sarah Lyon’s fourth solo show in Louisville, which runs July 3 through August 8, explores everything from her city and country to the local Goodwill and a nearby foundry. The show features both black and white and color photography but goes beyond to explore bronze casting and installation. An opening reception will be held on July 3 from 5 PM until 9 PM, at the gallery, 732 E. Market. Contact Amber Garvey at 502-561-1162 for more information.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS AND ACTIVISTS: TORCH SEEKS SUBMISSIONS FOR UPCOMING EDITIONS Torch: poetry, prose, and short stories by African American Women is currently accepting submissions of poetry, prose, and short stories for the Fall/Winter 2009 and Spring/Summer 2010 issues. Torch was established by Amanda Johnston to promote literary work of African American women. Torch provides a place to publish contemporary writing by experienced and emerging writers alike. Submissions, by email only, must be received by August 31. Visit Torch online for submission guidelines and information about Torch.
MOTESBOOKS SEEKS SUBMISSIONS FOR 2010 MOTIF ANTHOLOGY Motif is an anthology series published annually by Kate Larkin’s MotesBooks of Louisville. Each volume in the Motif series focuses on a theme. The theme for Volume 2 is Chance. Submissions may be poems, short stories, song lyrics, short memoirs, essays, letters, creative nonfiction, or other forms. Combinations of forms are acceptable up to the limits described: Prose must be under 3,000 words. Send no more than three poems/lyrics. All genres will be considered as long as “chance” is referenced or illuminated in the works. Submissions may address the theme either directly or indirectly, but “chance” should figure significantly and artfully in the piece. The definition or concept of “chance” can be interpreted in any way the writer sees fit, but could include ideas related to chaos, serendipity, mistake, the occasion for wonder, kismet, accident, fate, destiny, cause and effect, encounters, and/or predestination.
Each contributor whose work is accepted will receive one complimentary copy of the book upon publication as payment. Contributors will also receive an ongoing contributor's discount for unlimited purchases of additional copies to use or resell.
Submit by email only. Send manuscript (Arial 12 pt., single-spaced) as a .doc or .rtf file (MS Word) to . IMPORTANT: Use "MOTIF Anthology" as the subject line (email containing blank subject lines will automatically be deleted; other subject lines may inadvertently be tagged as spam). Include all author contact information (including phone, snail mail, and e-mail address) with each submission. Include a 50-60 word biographical note to appear in Contributor's section of the anthology in case of acceptance. Do not send previously published or simultaneously submitted material. Acceptances will be notified by end of 2009. Publication slated for early 2010. Whitely County writer and activist Marianne Worthington is Motif’s Editor. Submission period closes September 1.
