Civic Engagement

The strongest and most resilient communities often have the greatest and most diverse citizen participation. Whether it is using one’s gifts and talents to advocate on behalf of others; participating or encouraging others to participate in public life; engaging in individual volunteerism; or joining in common work that promotes and supports the well-being of women in our community—it all goes toward advancing quality of life.

When you act upon your cares and concerns you represent others who may not have a voice or are afraid or unable to take a stand. There are so many ways to make a difference and so many women and girls who will benefit. The role you can play in improving your community is limitless.

Get Involved! Help our community by finding your voice, staying informed or becoming involved. Metro Government provides many opportunities for women to become civically engaged and contribute to the enrichment of the Greater Louisville community.

"Civic engagement" can mean not only a set of actions and efforts, but a feeling of belonging, an experience of investment and ownership in the local, regional, national, and/or international political communities to which citizens belong. According to the New York Times, "Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference."
