Health and Safety Programs

Public Health & Wellness:

Family Planning Program - Offers several methods of birth control, screening examinations and pregnancy testing; pre-conceptional risk screening and counseling to increase the chances of a healthy baby. The cost of the pelvic examination and birth control supplies is based on a sliding fee scale.

Healthy Start - Seeks to reduce infant mortality (the rate at which children die before their first birthday) in targeted areas of west Louisville. Infant mortality rates in these areas range between 1.5 and 2 times higher than those of Metro Louisville as a whole. 

HANDS - Targets first time parents, from the prenatal period to approximately two months after delivery. The programs’ goal is to assist with child development, parenting skills, health services and other needed resources.

Kentucky Women’s Cancer Screening Program
- Breast and cervical screenings for women 21-65 years of age in Jefferson County who have no health insurance or third party payer.

Folic acid - Provided to women of childbearing age to decrease neural tube birth defects.

Free and Low-cost Mammograms – Mammograms and clinical breast exams for women over age 40 who qualify.

Teen Initiatives - With assistance from the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, the Louivsille Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness provides a sexual education cirriculum throughout the Jefferson County Public School System.

WIC - Brings more to the table than good food.  WIC is for good health. WIC, helps you get answers to your health and nutrition questions.  WIC helps mothers make infant feeding choices and encourages breastfeeding support, childhood shots and children's growth checkups. WIC teaches. WIC provides good food like milk, eggs, cereal and juice.  WIC families get monthly supplies of foods high in protein, iron, vitamin C and calcium.  

Jefferson County Attorney:

The Domestic Violence Intake Center - Provides essential services in one location to domestic violence victims. Services include victim safety planning, community referrals to counseling & social services, legal advocacy, and provision of 911 cell phones.

Office for Women:

Safe Havens Visitation and Exchange Center – Court ordered program that provides a safe venue for supervised visitation and exchange for families with a history or potential for Domestic Violence.
