May 7, 2008: Women’s Health Conversation
OFW invited an array of presenters to share their perspective of women’s health issues through an interactive conversation: Eleanor Jordan, Kentucky Commission on Women; Dr. Rita Thomas Wedig PhD, RD, LD Health Sciences Center Research Offices at the University of Louisville; Mary Johnson, Kentucky Women’s Health Registry; and Sheila Oldham Smith, and Nneka M. Mosely, the Center for Health Equity. Lisa Tobe, the new Director of the Center for Health Equity opened up the afternoon. After the presentations the participants and presenters were provided an opportunity to converse in an open format. |

April 26, 2008: Women For Habitat Build:
The second annual OFW Build Team assembled to take on another Habitat for Humanity build. Twelve volunteers assisted with painting and other finishing work on a house for a single-parent home. |

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month OFW partnered with Human Services this year to display a public information table in the lobby of 810 Barret for Child Abuse Prevention Month. We would like to thank all the area agencies that donated their informational materials. Information is available from Exploited Children’s Help Organization (ECHO); Family and Children First; Family Place; Safe Havens Exchange Center; Office for Women; Family Intervention Services; Neighborhood Place; and Home of the Innocents (HOTI). |

March 30, 2008: International Women's Day Community Art Project: "Inspirational Women"
People of all ages were invited to create a fabric square relating to the theme of the art project, 'Inspirational Women'. These submissions, along with other submissions from the community, will be assembled into a large artwork by the Americana Fiberworks Group, (an emerging micro-enterprise supporting Somali-Bantu women). Skylar Smith, artist/teacher and Pat Sturtzel,artist/therapist/mentor were the directors of the project. |

March 21, 2008: OFW coordinated a forum for visiting International women leaders focused on the role of women in Louisville Metro Government and their service to the community. Kimberly Bunton (Director, Housing and Family Services), Jane Driskell (Chief Financial Officer), Tina Lentz (Director, Office for Women), Melissa Mershon (Director, Department of Neighborhoods), and Beth Niblock (Chief Information Officer) discussed their roles* in metro government. Mayor Jerry Abramson presented Honorary Citizenship Certificates and keys to the city to the international participants from Laos, Israel, Egypt, Ghana, Mexico, Philippines, and Sri Lanka. *Five out of twelve director positions in Metro government are currently held by females. |

March 18, 2008: OFW coordinated the 1st Annual Denim Day in Louisville for Department of Housing and Family Services. More than 125 employees signed on to raise awareness of sexual assault by wearing denim. The Italian High Court overturned a rape conviction in 1999 prompting women in the Italian legislature to protest by wearing jeans. This was the beginning of the worldwide observance of Denim Day. March 11, 2008: Kentucky Women Remembered Ceremony To kick off the statewide celebration of Women's History Month in Kentucky, the Kentucky Commission on Women joined Governor and Mrs. Steve Beshear to honor three distinguished women of Kentucky (Sally Shallenberger Brown, Jacqueline A. Noonan and the late Lyda “Gertrude” Ramey). Portraits of the three distinguished Kentucky women will be hung in the state capitol.

March is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) Annual information table, set up by OFW in the Urban Government Center at 810 Barret Avenue, provides free information to the public and employees. A big thank you to each of the organizations (Center for Women & Families, Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs, PEACC, MENSWORK, SANE) that donate the several hundred ribbons, printed materials, and buttons provided to visitors of the table during SAAM in Kentucky. |
