OFW OVERVIEW OF STATUS OF WOMEN IN JEFFERSON COUNTY
The Kentucky Overall report provides an overview of the status of women in Jefferson County.
According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research report dated December 2006, Kentucky is ranked the 5th worst state for women based on health, economic well-being, education and political participation. Kentucky consistently fell below the national average in seven of the eight indicators analyzed (median annual earnings; earnings ratio; labor force participation; managerial/professional occupations; advanced educational attainment; women-owned businesses; and percent of those living above poverty). Kentucky women do exceed the national average when it comes to health insurance by 2% - Kentucky at 83% compared to the national average at 81%.

In a report published by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research in December 2006, it was reported that states with strong public sectors, health and education centers and financial services seem to create more favorable economic environments for women. Kentucky was ranked 5th worst in the nation overall in that report. This report summarizes those findings and provides a comparison to the findings of a similar report that was issued in November 2004 as well as with national averages

This report is based on the Cross-Cultural Community Conversations Project which consisted of a series of 'platicas' (conversations) with Hispanic/Latino men and women to assess their unique strengths, needs and perspectives and to enhance our ability to provide equal access to and quality of services in Louisville Metro. This project was based on collaborations with a number of community partners.

This report is based on the work of the Louisville Metro Domestic Violence Fatality Review (LMDVFR) committee, formerly the Jefferson County Domestic Violence Mortality Review committee.

The hosts of the summit, the Louisville Metro Office for Women and Women 4 Women, are committed to stepping up their efforts to turn these statistics around. They believe the best way to begin is by tapping into the vibrant network of organizations and individuals in our community who support and empower girls, women and their families on a daily basis.
The aim of the summit was to open an ongoing channel of communication so that organizations and agencies serving womenand girls can learn more about what others are doing in their areas of interest (girls, aging, health, etc.) learn about issues outside of their areas of interest.
