New Cooper Chapel Road Bridge to Open

LOUISVILLE (July 16, 2007) – On Monday, July 16, Louisville Metro Public Works crews will open a newly constructed bridge on Cooper Chapel Road. The old bridge over Fish Pool Creek experienced a pavement failure in May. The bridge is located between Preston Highway and Smyrna Parkway.

Construction for the $250,000 project started on May 16. The bridge will reopen to traffic today at 3 p.m.

The 5,000 vehicles that traveled the road each day were rerouted to Preston Highway, Smyrna Parkway and the Gene Snyder Freeway during the construction.

The bridge, which city engineers believe was built in the early 1900s, was scheduled to be replaced in 2009 as part of the Cooper Chapel Road widening project. Public Works ensured that the new bridge is compatible with the future widening project.
