Potential Sewer Collapse Closes Portion of Broadway
Wednesday August 12, 2009
Louisville Metro Public Works is immediately restricting a section of East Broadway because of the potential threat of an underground sewer collapse. MSD discovered damage to the sewer structure that may have been caused by last week’s flash flooding.
East Broadway will be restricted between Brent and Campbell Streets (near the railroad overpass) until emergency repairs are complete. Four lanes – two in each direction – will remain open.
MSD detected a problem with the underground sewer structure during routine maintenance today. Repair workers are focused on a section of the sewer that lies directly under Broadway. The Broadway sewer is eight feet in diameter, made of brick and is more than 130 years old.
As repair work continues, more lane closures are possible. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes.
