Improvements Underway on LaGrange Road near Interstate 265

Wednesday September 8, 2010

Louisville, KY (September 8, 2010) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises motorists in Jefferson and Oldham counties to be aware of construction on KY 146 (LaGrange Road) near Interstate 265. The exit ramp from northbound I-265 is being widened to accommodate a dual right turning lane onto KY 146. The construction also includes improvements at the intersection of KY 146 and Chamberlain Lane/Factory Lane with the addition of some new turning lanes and lengthening some existing turning lanes.

“LaGrange Road is a heavily traveled road due to the industry in the area, which includes the Ford Assembly Plant on Chamberlain Lane,” said Matt Bullock, Chief District Engineer for the Department of Highways Louisville District. “Traffic delays in this area often back up onto northbound I-265. This project will improve the traffic flow along LaGrange Road between I-265 and the commercial entrance at Spring Station Road.”

The left turn lane on westbound KY 146 at the entrance ramp for southbound I-265 will be lengthened to increase storage capacity of vehicles. On eastbound KY 146, the left turn lane onto Chamberlain Lane and the right turn lane onto Spring Station Road will also be extended.

To improve safety, motorists exiting the businesses along KY 146 will have right turn only access. Persons wishing to turn left onto westbound KY 146 will need to use Factory Lane and then make the turn at the traffic signal.

An additional left turn lane is being striped on Factory Lane at the approach to KY 146. The final configuration will provide motorists a left turn only lane, a shared left turn/thru lane and a right turn only lane.

The final component of the project is an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) device to alert motorists on northbound I-265 when a train is crossing at Chamberlain Lane. Currently when a train is crossing at this location, there are heavy delays on KY 146 for motorists trying to turn left onto Chamberlain Lane. The use of this ITS device will give motorists the option of taking the next exit at Westport Road to access Chamberlain Lane. Two signs will be installed on northbound I-265 between Old Henry Road and KY 146 that read “Chamberlain Lane Traffic – Use Exit 32 When Flashing” (see attachment).

The contractor is restricted from having lane closures on KY 146 weekdays from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Only shoulder closures will be utilized on I-265 for installation of the ITS device.

Louisville Paving Inc. was awarded the contract for this project in the amount of $834,000. The work is scheduled for completion in November 2010.

The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Dial 511 or log on tohttp://511.ky.gov/main.jsf for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
