Construction to Resume on Interstate System in Jefferson County
Thursday September 15, 2011
Lane Closures Scheduled for Interstates 64 and 71
Louisville, KY (September 15, 2011) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office advises motorists that construction will resume this week on Interstates 64 and 71. Work on these routes had been postponed in the wake of the closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge which carries Interstate 64 over the Ohio River between Louisville, KY and New Albany, IN.
Asphalt paving operations will begin again on I-64 between I-65 and the Cochran Hill Tunnels (mile points 4.9 and 8.40). Lane closures are possible Sunday – Thursday from 10:00 p.m. each evening until 6:00 a.m. the following morning and Friday- Saturday from 10:00 p.m. each evening until 9:00 a.m. the following morning. The speed limit in this work zone is 55 MPH.
Work has also started again on I-71 for asphalt resurfacing and bridge deck restoration. This project extends from Interstate 64 in downtown Louisville to Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway). Evening lane closures are possible weeknights from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the following morning.
This weekend, the left lanes of both northbound and southbound I-71 will be closed between I-64 and the Blankenbaker Lane overpass (mile points 0.0 and 3.5). These lane closures are scheduled from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16th until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 19th. The speed limit in this work zone is reduced to 45 MPH.
In addition, the exit ramp from eastbound I-264 to southbound I-71 will be reduced to one lane during this same weekend time frame.
Weekday lane closures had previously been announced for I-71 to allow for bridge deck restoration. This work will be rescheduled based upon the time frame for re-opening the Sherman Minton Bridge.
Oversize loads are not being permitted on the interstates in the downtown Louisville area. These vehicles are being detoured via Interstate 265.
The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
