How Did We Do in 2006?
HERE IS SOME STATISTICAL DATA RELATIVE TO THE SERVICES WE PERFORMED IN 2006:
- Some 70,135 tons of residential garbage was collected in the Urban Services District (former City of Louisville) - each household averaged about 1,508 lbs.
- Louisville Metro's overall recycling programs diverted 21,311 tons from the solid waste stream. NOTE: Over half of all residential garbage generated in a household can be recycled!
- We collected 54,195 tons of junk from Louisville Metro residents through our quarterly junk pickup program, junk items brought by residents and businesses to the Waste Reduction Center and the semi-annual junk drop-offs. That equals about the weight of 7,200 male elephants.
- Louisville Metro has a yard waste ban - no yard waste is allowed to be landfilled. Because of that, over 19,484 tons of yard waste and woody waste were collected in the Urban Services District and turned into compost.
- Our year-round e-scrap recycling program, CyberCycle, allowed us to recycling over 229 tons of electronics material. That means it didn't end up in our landfills!
- Due to our partnership with Public Works, Christmas trees were brought to the Tree-Cycling centers and 11,280 pounds of mulch will be used by residents and Metro Government in some of our area parks and Brightsites.
- Again in 2006, Louisville Metro participated in the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Novelis Corporation Cans for Cash contest to bring awareness to aluminum can recycling. Louisville’s campaigned, dubbed “Aluminaville – Recycling for a Cleaner and Greener Louisville” won in the highest population class for best marketing and education campaign. Louisville Metro entered the contest for the first time last year and won. We are now TWO FOR TWO!
- The Business Office Paper Recycling Program collected almost 375 tons of mixed office paper and $8,195 in material revenues were presented to Brightside to plant trees in the Louisville Metro area.
