Garbage & Recycling Carts Now Available for Purchase Online

Tuesday April 30, 2013

LOUISVILLE, KY (April 30, 2013) – Need to purchase a larger recycling cart or replace one that’s damaged? Those services and more are now just few clicks away with the new Online Order Center through Solid Waste Management Services (SWMS).

Citizens and some businesses within the Urban Services District (USD) can simply visit Solid Waste’s homepage at and click on the “Order Online” icon. After just two steps to determine eligibility and to verify the address is within the USD, residents can access several options including purchasing additional containers, reporting missing or damaged carts, exchanging a garbage cart for a different size, and exchanging a garbage cart lid for an orange recycling lid to convert an existing container.

“We are constantly looking for innovative ways to better serve our residents,” Mayor Fischer said. “This online option provides a simple, convenient process for many of our residents to replace or purchase new carts or bins. We especially hope that many residents will choose to purchase larger recycling carts to help increase our landfill diversion and make Louisville a cleaner, greener city.”

This online purchase program is an extension of a pilot program that began in October 2012. Two residential recycling routes received 95-gallon recycling carts to replace the existing18-gallon bins.

Beyond providing a larger container, these carts are equipped with wheels, handles, and lids making curbside recycling much more convenient. The amount of recyclable material collected has already increased an average of 83% in these neighborhoods, resulting in over 116 additional tons being diverted from the landfill. This is just one of several steps undertaken by Metro government to help Louisville achieve its Sustainability Plan goal to increase recycling 25% by November 2014.
