Overview

The Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government Waste Management District, which is under the authority of KRS 109.011-310, includes in its jurisdiction all territory within the borders of Jefferson County. The District is managed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Mayor and staffed by the Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management Department.

The powers and duties of the Waste Management District involve the preparation and submission of solid waste management plans required by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The District is charged with regulating the solid waste industry (KRS 224.43-340) in a manner sufficient to protect the public health.

Responsibilities also include licensing all off-site waste management facilities and private waste haulers doing business within the geographical boundaries of Louisville/Jefferson County.
