Gritton Named President of Workforce Development Council
Thursday March 5, 2009
Michael B. Gritton, KentuckianaWorks executive director, is the new president of the Workforce Development Council, part of the United States Conference of Mayors.
Gritton will lead the council's efforts to influence Congress and the U.S. Department of Labor in directing more employment and training funding to cities, a key issue in the nation's current economy. A Louisville native, Gritton has been a member of the council since four and previously served as vice president.
“Michael provides a national presence for the Louisville region in all workforce development and training issues,” said Metro Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson. “We are fortunate to have his talent and commitment working for us not only on a regional level but on the national stage as well.”
Since 2002, Gritton has served as the executive director of KentuckianaWorks, Greater Louisville's Workforce Investment Board. During his tenure, KentuckianaWorks has established One-Stop Career Centers on local community college campuses and expanded the regional One-Stop system, become the nation's first workforce investment board to operate a college access center and created a strong youth program. Prior to leading KentuckianaWorks, Gritton was the director of the City of Louisville's Office of Strategic Planning.
As president of the Workforce Development Council, Gritton will oversee several national events for promoting workforce development and training issues and formulating policy. The council sponsors an annual Congressional Forum to bring together congressional representatives and Department of Labor staff with council staff. The organization also has two national meetings in conjunction with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to provide local leaders an opportunity for input on workforce and training policy.
