Bus Tour to Highlight Local Food

LOUISVILLE (September 9, 2011) - Louisville Farm to Table and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture are co-sponsoring a bus tour of "sustainable Kentucky" on Monday, September 12. The tour, targeted to restaurateurs, chefs, farmers market managers, and other food providers, will include two family farms and a produce auction that help bring Kentucky food and drink to Louisville consumers and dining establishments.
The tour will allow participants to taste and learn how food is raised in Kentucky and brought to the table by the Commonwealth's growing food infrastructure. Participants will meet the farmers and distributors, see the farms, taste the food and watch a produce auction in progress.
The first stop is Capstone Produce Auction, in Henry County, which aggregates locally-grown seasonal vegetables to sell for the highest bid. Auctioneer David Neville will explain how the auction works, and participants will see the range of pricing of seasonal produce, and the auction in action.
The second stop is Smith-Berry Winery, also in Henry County. A former tobacco farm, it is now an agri-tourism destination that grows grapes , imports juice, makes wine and holds a summer dinner/concert series. The family also raises beef cattle, sheep, and hay, and a family garden.
The final stop is for lunch at Shelby County’s Gallrein Farms. The Gallreins are famous for their corn but they also have an assortment of vegetables in a variety of venues, from the produce auction to the hot line at Norton Hospital.
