*Please note the 2013 Kentucky Building and Residential Code goes into effect January 1, 2014

Building Codes

Louisville Metro Ordinance 150.001 adopts the 2013 Kentucky Building Code* (KBC) and the 2013 Kentucky Residential Code* as promulgated by the Board of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Commonwealth of Kentucky. These codes incorporate by reference additional codes and standards as identified below.

  • 2012 International Mechanical Code
  • 2009 NFPA National Fuel Gas Code
  • 2009 ICC/ANSI A117.1 - Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities
  • 2009 International Energy Conservation Code - buildings regulated by the KBC code
  • 2009 International Energy Conservation Code - buildings regulated by the KRC code
  • 2007 Kentucky Plumbing Code
  • 2011 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (Effective September 1, 2009)
  • 2012 International Fire Code (IFC) (New construction projects, and only when specifically referenced by the body of KBC)
  • 2010 NFPA 13- Sprinkler Systems
  • 2010 NFPA 13D-Sprinkler Systems - One/Two Family Dwelling
  • 2010 NFPA 13R-Sprinkler systems in Residential Occupancies
  • 2010 NFPA 14-Standpipe, Hose Systems
  • 2010 NFPA 72-Fire Alarm
