Instructions for using IPL's Online Permitting System

IPL now provides contractors the ability to obtain permits online for some permit types. Each contractor must have an online account established prior to obtaining permits. Online payments can be made only with Visa or Mastercard.

The permit types that can be obtained online are;

• Electrical
• Plumbing
• HVAC
  • Mechanical Refrigeration
  • Range Hood (without fire suppression)
  • Solid Fuel Device

Create an Account
If you are a contractor interested in using Online Permitting and want to set up an account, follow the link below to complete the application. An email will be sent to you with your User Name and Password.

New User Account Request

Log In
If you have already created an account, and want to log into the Online Permitting system, enter your User Name and Password.

Click on the Log In button.

If you forgot your password, enter your username in the field below and click the Get Password button. Your password will be emailed to you immediately.

On the next page you will enter your contractor license number. A user must be associated with the Contractor in order to obtain a permit online for the contractor.

Enter the license number and click on next.

A verification screen will appear, if your contractor name appears If it is not your contractor name click the previous button and correct the license number.

Click the next button.

Street Address

Next you must enter the street address where the work will be performed. If you do not have an address you can not obtain the permit online.

• "Number" is the street number
• "Dir" is the street direction, North, South East or West, if none leave the "-" in the field
• "Street Name" is the name of the street
• "Suffix" is the Street type abbreviation, i.e. Drive, Way, Lane, etc., if none leave the "-" in the field
• "AptNo" is the apartment number if any, if there is not one leave the field blank.
• "City" will always be Louisville and State will always be KY.
• "Zip" is the zip code, you only need to enter the five digit zip code

Enter the address and click next.

Permit Type

On the next screen you will select the permit type. There are only 3 types you can select: Electrical Permit, HVAC Master Permit or Plumbing Permit. If you want to obtain a permit for Mechanical Refrigeration, Range Hood or a Solid Fuel Burning Device, select HVAC Master Permit. (You will only be allowed to obtain a permit for the type of permit the Contractor is licensed for even though the system will take you all the way to the end of the permitting process.)

Then click next.

Job Description
On the Job Description screen you will select the Occupancy Type and Work Type, enter the Estimated Cost and a brief description of the work to be performed and/or any message you want passed on to the inspector.

There are a total of eight occupancy types you can select from. They are as follows;

There are various Work Types available depending on the permit type you are obtaining. The work types for the each permit type are as follows;

Electrical Permit

HVAC Master Permit

Plumbing Permit

After completing all four fields click next.
