HVAC Replacement Installations & the National Electrical Code
A reminder that all HVAC replacement installations must comply with the manufacturer's listings and the National Electrical Code.
HVAC equipment has become more efficient, the manufacturers have lowered the maximum amperage rating on some HVAC units, which in turn requires a smaller overcurrent device (breaker) than the equipment replaced. In order to protect the new equipment the overcurrent device must be replaced. This information is typically listed on the equipment nameplate.
Installation of equipment with a overcurrent device higher than required is a violation of the National Electrical Code, in addition it may void the property owners warranty from the equipment manufacturer. It is not uncommon for inspectors to find this situation.
Make sure that any staff member involved in the installation of HVAC equipment is made aware of this issue.
Note that an HVAC contractor can install and connect the equipment from the load side of the existing disconnect and install the proper size breaker without an electrical permit. However, if there is new wiring installed or replaced between the overcurrent device and the equipment disconnect then an electrical permit is required prior to performing the work. As with any permit, worked performed without a permit is subject to penalties.
If you have any question regarding the overcurrent device or if an electrical permit is needed call us at 502.574.3321.
