We welcome your attendance to the First Annual Social Justice & Public Health Speaker Series. The social conditions into which we are born, live and work have a profound effect on our well-being and longevity. This Speaker’s Series is designed to bring attention to and heighten awareness about these factors that are influencing health inequities. It is our hope that by beginning a dialogue about these issues, we can move toward the research and collaboration needed to address the social factors influencing health inequities and bring about change. Our Mission:

Facilitate the religious communities of Louisville to response to domestic violence

Facilitate the response of Domestic Violence responders and service providers to address spirituality

Domestic violence affects one in three women, men and children in our community; and is harmful to our community as a whole. The Religious community is the foundation of any healthy community and as such, is the foundation of any community response to domestic violence.
Domestic violence affects the whole person – including their relationship with God and with their community of Faith.
We are a collective of local advocates who are coming together to develop a plan to meet the above mission. We are planning a conference in October (as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month) to begin increasing the dialogue and improve the efforts of these two responses systems to respond to and prevent domestic violence. Please join us for a special recruitment meeting where you will find out more about this effort, what our plans are, and how you can be involved. There will also be an opportunity for you to have input into our agenda.

JMF Pre-School Nature Adventure - A Small Pond

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Approximately 3,000 school children will join several hundred Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness Department staff members on Tuesday, May 13 for Walk on the Waterfront 2008. This year nearly three times as many children will be walking than ever before. This marks the largest number of participants ever for the event, which is now in its eleventh year. Public Health and Wellness Director Dr. Adewale Troutman will lead the walk. Mascots such as the Fazoli ‘s Tomato, Wendy, Louie the Lightning Bug, and the Delta Dental Molar will also be on hand. The event will be held Tuesday, May 13 and will begin in front of the Public Health and Wellness Department at 400 E. Gray Street at 11 AM.
The group will walk from the Public Health and Wellness Department to Waterfront Park and will then proceed along the Ohio River to the Great Lawn on the two-mile walk. Walk on the Waterfront, which began in 1998, recognizes the work of public health and encourages walking as a healthy habit among children and adults. Walk on the Waterfront is a Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement event and comes on the heels of this weekend’s Healthy Hometown Pedestrian Summit which is convening people from throughout the community who wish to champion all forms of walking for better health. Elementary and high school children from the Jefferson County Public Schools Health Promotion Schools of Excellence will participate in Walk on the Waterfront 2008. Participating schools include Churchill Park, Eisenhower, Fairdale High School, Foster, Hawthorne, Hazelwood, Indian Trail, Kerrick, Layne, Sanders, Shacklette, and Wellington.

TRIAD's 10th Anniversary

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 12:00
Mayor Jerry Abramson wants you to be a part of building a more efficient government and a stronger community – which is why he has scheduled The Mayor’s Community Conversations. The Community Conversations are your opportunity to talk one-on-one with the Mayor and Louisville Metro Department Directors about issues of immediate concern or your thoughts for the future of Louisville Metro. You may have a problem in your neighborhood or want to discuss a project of interest community-wide. You can ask a question or share an idea. Community Conversations are a real opportunity to have your voice heard – and your needs met.

Minority & Community Affairs Committee

Monday, May 19, 2008 11:00AM
AARP Kentucky, Catholic Charities, Community Action Partnership, KIPDA (Kentucky Indiana Planning & Development Agency), Louisville Metro Police, Louisville Metro Solid Waste, Senior Pharmacy Solutions and TRIAD are teaming up to provide opportunities for Louisville residents to safely dispose of their expired pharmaceutical products. SIX DRUG TOSS EVENTS are being sponsored by the above partners in Louisville Metro from May 20 to May 22nd.

Pharmaceutical products should never be flushed down the toilet or drain, burned in the open or thrown in the trash because:

These items can contaminate the environment if they get into the drinking and ground water.
Pharmaceuticals may kill bacteria or produce drug resistance bacteria in sewage treatment plants and septic systems if flushed down the drain.
Burning can release toxic pollutants into the air.
If these items are scavenged from your trash receptacles the drugs can be illegally used or sold.
If taken by mistake can cause serious health problems.
Here are some of the items Drug Toss organizers are encouraging residents to bring in:

All expired prescription drugs
All unsealed cough syrups, eye drops or nose sprays
All prescription medications that should have been kept cold but were not
All bulk or loose pills and capsules
All unsealed tubes of creams, ointments, etc.

Representatives from Louisville Metro Police and Louisville Metro Solid Waste will be on hand to make sure the products will be disposed of safely. Residents are urged to black out all personal information on the pharmaceutical containers. Here are the dates and locations forthe six Drug Toss events:
