How City Government is Organized

Louisville Metro Government provides a wide range of services to 700,000 residents who live in its 386 square miles. It was created in 2003 after Louisville citizens voted to merge the former city and county governments.

City government is led by Mayor Jerry Abramson, elected to a second term as head of the consolidated city in 2006.

The executive branch, as shown above, includes 12 departments that provide services to the public and maintain all city operations.

A legislative branch has 26 Metro Council members with responsibilities ranging from legislation to zoning changes to approval of the city budget.
